Responsible AI

AI that helps students choose with more clarity.

FindU uses AI to make college discovery more personal, less overwhelming, and easier to act on. This page explains what the advisor does, where its limits are, and how we protect student data while using AI systems.

Our commitments

The advisor works for the student

FindU is built to help students understand their options. Colleges cannot buy a recommendation, ranking, or advisor answer.

AI is labeled and fallible

The advisor is an AI tool. It can be incomplete or wrong, so students should verify important details like deadlines, costs, eligibility, and admissions requirements.

Student data is not for sale

We do not sell personal information. Colleges only receive identifiable student information when a student chooses to be discoverable or asks to connect.

No training external AI models on student data

We do not permit our AI providers to train their general models on FindU student conversations, profiles, or school-search activity.

What the advisor can do

  • Explain college options, fit factors, deadlines, cost concepts, majors, scholarships, and application steps.
  • Use a student's FindU profile, saved schools, preferences, and conversation history to make guidance more personal.
  • Search or use school data when it needs fresher or more specific information.
  • Help students prepare better questions for a counselor, parent, college, or trusted adult.

What the advisor will not do

  • Guarantee admission, scholarships, financial aid, or any specific college outcome.
  • Replace a school counselor, licensed therapist, financial advisor, attorney, or emergency service.
  • Use sensitive traits to steer students toward or away from colleges.
  • Accept payment from a college to change what the advisor says to a student.

Safety boundaries

The FindU advisor is scoped to college, career, scholarship, and application guidance. If a student appears to be in crisis or asks for help with self-harm, violence, abuse, or another immediate safety concern, the advisor is designed to stop normal college guidance and direct the student toward emergency help, 988 in the United States, a school counselor, a parent or guardian, or another trusted adult.

How student data moves through AI systems

To answer a student, FindU may send the student's message and limited relevant context, such as profile preferences, saved schools, school data, and recent conversation history, to contracted AI and infrastructure providers. We route this data through FindU-controlled services, use it to provide the advisor response, and require providers to process it only for our service purposes.

We minimize what the advisor needs for the task. We do not send protected or sensitive profile fields to steer college recommendations unless that information is necessary for a student-requested feature, such as scholarship or financial-aid guidance. We do not allow AI providers to train general-purpose models on student data from FindU.

School and district use

FindU currently supports students who sign up directly, and we are building toward school and district partnerships. When a school or district chooses to use FindU as an outsourced educational service, we expect that relationship to be governed by a written agreement that limits use of student information to the agreed educational purpose, prohibits sale or unauthorized reuse, supports access and deletion workflows, and gives the school or district appropriate control over education records.

In plain English: FindU does not treat "FERPA compliant" as a badge we can claim without context. For formal school use, the right posture is a school-official model with the school, district, or program controlling the educational purpose and data terms.

Retention, deletion, and analytics

Advisor conversations are retained while they are useful for active guidance, but raw advisor conversation history is not kept indefinitely. FindU deletes advisor conversations after 24 months of inactivity, and deletes empty abandoned conversations after 30 days. If a user deletes their account, FindU begins the deletion process described in our Privacy Policy. We may retain aggregated or de-identified analytics that cannot reasonably identify a student.

We use product analytics and session replay to understand where users get stuck and improve the experience. In our web app, we use commercially reasonable technical controls to mask password fields where available. We use these recordings for product improvement and support, not for selling student data.

Questions or school review

Counselors, school leaders, parents, and students can reach us at team@joinfindu.com. You can also review our Privacy Policy and Terms.

Bottom line

FindU uses AI to support student decision-making, not to replace human judgment or sell access to students. The advisor should make the college search clearer, safer, and more student-directed.
